Inaugural National Financial Crime Fighter Day to be Celebrated October 26th

AUSTIN, TX  – They are the quiet superheroes who work tirelessly to protect us from crime. They do not change in a phone booth or are not signaled by a spotlight. They are Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) professionals and financial crime fighters tasked with the challenge of protecting our financial system on a daily basis.

The inaugural National Financial Crime Fighter Day (BSA/AML Professional Day) will be celebrated on October 26. Abrigo, a technology platform that America’s financial institutions use to manage risk and drive growth, created the day to acknowledge the important work BSA and AML professionals do. The first-ever BSA/AML appreciation day is also recognized by formal proclamation in Alabama, Louisiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Tennessee and Texas and by the National Day Calendar.

“We are proud to continue to push for more awareness and recognition of these unsung superheroes,” said Bob Kim, vice president of client and partner solutions at Abrigo. “BSA and AML professionals work tirelessly to protect our financial system from money laundering, fraud and other financial crimes. Their hard work often goes unrecognized outside of our industry and we are happy to help shine the national light on their unrelenting dedication to their occupation with National Financial Crime Fighter Day.”

In the 1960s and 70s, drug wars created an increase in illicit and ill-gotten gains entering the United States financial system and often leaving it to fund more criminal activity. Congress passed the Bank Secrecy Act in 1970 to better protect the United States financial system by stopping money laundering and financial crimes.

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 President George W. Bush signed the USA PATRIOT Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) on October 26. It cemented the important role BSA/AML professionals play in the financial industry.

BSA professionals stop drug cartel money from getting back to their country of origin, prevent human traffickers from financing their operations and uncover activity that precludes terrorists from funding their activities. This role often comes with heavy ramifications, large amounts of stress and little tolerance for errors, making them worthy of a day of recognition.

A company that proudly supports the work BSA/AML professionals do, Abrigo aimed to bring more awareness for the true superheroes of the financial industry with BSA/AML Professional Day in 2017 and continue to do so this year and beyond.  For more information on National Financial Crime Fighter Day and BSA/AML Professional Day, visit BSAAMLDay.com.
