Human Trafficking

Free Banker’s Toolbox Webinar on Human Trafficking

human-trafficking-webinar

Human trafficking – a form of modern slavery – is one of the fastest growing criminal activities in the world, exploiting over 45 million people and generating an estimated $150 billion in profits each year. While global in reach, human trafficking also affects individuals, communities and economies across the United States.

Through the use of force, fraud and coercion, traffickers compel victims of all genders, ages and nationalities into situations of labor and sexual exploitation. The basics of supply and demand economics provide one lens through which to understand this criminal enterprise. In Texas alone, traffickers exploit an estimated $600 million from laborers, and minor and youth sex trafficking costs Texas $6.6 billion.

More often than not, money is the fuel that incentivizes traffickers and fuels the operations of trafficking networks. Financial institutions have a critical role to play to identify and disrupt human trafficking. Join John Nehme, President & CEO of Allies Against Slavery, as we discuss what financial institutions and BSA professionals can do to help identify, flag and prevent human trafficking.

Allies Against Slavery

John became the first President & CEO of Allies Against Slavery in 2013 after leading the organization in a volunteer capacity for two years. Allies is an innovative nonprofit that builds slave-free cities by mobilizing communities, supporting local trafficking survivors and promoting large-scale system change. Under John’s leadership, Allies launched the Slave-Free City Network, an initiative that coordinates and resources multi-disciplinary partners across eight sectors in the city of Austin. His vision also inspired the Texas Slavery Mapping Project, a groundbreaking research partnership with the University of Texas Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault and the University of Texas Bureau of Business Research. John is the Producer of American Love Story: A Community In Search Of Freedom, a forthcoming documentary from Trade In Hope about a former slave and an unlikely group of citizens who come together in an effort to create the first slave-free city in the United States.

John has a degree in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University where he studied as an Ingram Scholar, and he earned his MA in Political Economy from the University of Sydney, Australia, as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.
