Abrigo’s Gift to the Austin Children’s Shelter

Happy holiday season! With treats filling up the kitchen, Secret Santa exchanges, office decorations, and a festive holiday party, the Abrigo Penguins have certainly been getting in the spirit. Festivities aside, perhaps the most meaningful holiday initiative was our company-wide toy drive benefitting the Austin Children’s Shelter.

 

The Austin Children’s Shelter provides on-campus services for children, young adults, and families affected by abuse, exploitation, and neglect. It is a part of the SAFE (Stop Abuse For Everyone) Alliance in Austin, which is a structured partnership between the Austin Children’s Shelter and SafePlace. The goal of the SAFE Alliance is to lead in ending these types of abuse and to build a just and safe community free from violence and abuse.

This year, the shelter organized the Fulfill a Wish program to provide toys and basic needs to the families living on campus. Children receive five gifts, adults receive two and families receive one (typically a needs-based item). The items are delivered in time for the holidays.

Teams went shopping together over lunch or in the evening. Some even included their families in the holiday shopping. Abrigo generously granted each department a budget so that we could shop without interfering with our own holiday spending.

The outcome was amazing! Together, the Abrigo penguins provided holiday gifts to 22 individuals in 6 families. Some of the gifts included books, toy cars, a karaoke machine, blankets, dishes, diapers, shoes, clothing, jackets and more.

 

We are thankful for the opportunity to share our resources with the community. “This is a way for us to get down to our roots and reach out to people in the community. It’s really nice to know that we could help support families in our community on such an intimate level,” said one Penguin. We are thrilled to make some families’ wishes come true this holiday season.
